E.P.D.M
Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer.
E.P.D.M. is a weather resistant synthetic rubber from which many flexible gaskets for windows are made. [top]
Edge Effect
Heat transfer at the edge of an insulating glass unit due to the thermal properties of the spacers and sealants. [top]
Egress Window
Window designed to be large enough for one fire fighter to climb in, or one person to climb out in an emergency. US building codes require each bedroom of a home to have an emergency exit window, with minimum sizes specified. [top]
Elastomeric Material
A term often used for rubber and polymers that have properties similar to those of rubber; thermal break polymers having the elastic properties of natural rubber. [top]
Electrochromic Glazing
Glass or other glazing material that can be switched from clear to opaque electronically. [top]
Elevation
A scale drawing of any side of a building; or, refers to the height above a specific reference point, especially sea level. [top]
End Cap
The cap inserted in the ends of deflection channel retainer clips against rough opening jambs; usually made of aluminium sheet metal or PVC. [top]
End Dam
The aluminium component installed in the end of a deflection channel against rough opening jambs. Used to extend the deflection channel to the jamb and provide a base to caulk on for the external sealing process. [top]
Energy Star
A program sponsored by the US Department of Energy which establishes minimum performance standards for a window to be recognized as energy efficient. Three different sets of standards for U-Value and solar heat gain have been established for three different climate zones in the US. [top]
Entrance
The 'entrance' is the doorway, vestibule, or lobby through which one enters a building; main entrance doors have higher hardware standards as they are more commonly used and more prone to wear and tear. [top]
Envelope Consultant
The Contractors consultant hired to maintain and ensure a competent building envelope. [top]
Equal Leg
A type of extrusion typically associated with patio door frames that are similar to a rebate extrusion with the exception that the interior leg is extended to be parallel with the exterior rebate leg. [top]
EuroWindoor
A consortium of European window, door, and curtain wall industry associations involved in the development of common EU (European Union) standards [top]
Extended Head
Used in the 4000 and 9000 series, it has a taller toe and heel surface to accommodate deflection channels during installation. [top]
Extension Jamb
A trim component which extends from the interior of the window frame to the interior wall. [top]
Exterior
Exterior refers to the outside or exterior surface of the unit, door, window or coupler. [top]
Exterior Corner
A corner coupler installed in a building that has the center of the coupler angle's radius on the interior side of the building. Exterior corners are the reverse of an Interior Corner. [top]
Exterior Glazing
Exterior glazing is a method in which glass is secured in an opening from the exterior of the building. [top]
Exterior Length
Exterior length refers to the heel dimension of the exterior height of a frame or installation component. (Bypass frames have taller exterior heights to allow bypass slab to be hidden behind it, the interior height is shorter so the frame can rest and be secured on top of the slab to support the weight of the window.) [top]
Extra to Contract
Any additions to the original scope of work defined by the contract are considered extra's to the contract. [top]
Extrusion
The process in which a heated material is pushed through a die, used to produce aluminium, vinyl (PVC), and other profiles or components used in the production of windows and doors. Term also is used to refer to the profiles or lineal manufactured by this process and used to make window and door components. [top]
