Fabrication Sketch

Schematics created with the program Window Maker designed to show the updated fabrication sizes and standards of a particular frame including colour, hardware, that Starline's Shop will use to manufacture the frame prior to shipping and installation. [top]

Fanlight

A half-circle window over a door or window with radiating bars. [top]

Fasten

To mechanically attach components together with fasteners such as screws, bolts, pins, nails, hooks, etc. [top]

Fenestration

Fenestration is an architectural term referring to the arrangement of windows in a wall. It is generally used as the standard industry term for windows. From the Latin word 'fenestra' meaning window. [top]

Filled and Debridged

Filling and Debridging is the process of filling the extruded thermal break cavity in an extrusion that separates the interior and exterior sides of the extrusion with a liquid polyethylene and letting it cool, then removing the aluminium 'bridge' that spans the thermal break cavity by milling it with the process of debridging. [top]

Finish Hardware

Exposed hardware such as hinges, pivots, locks, etc. that have a finished appearance as well as a function used with doors and windows. [top]

Finished Opening

A term used to define a window frames opening after the miscellaneous preparation material (Deflection channel, installation angle etc.) has been installed. The installation is paused at this point until Quality Assurance sign's off the opening as deficiency free, at which point the installation can continue. [top]

Fixed Lite

A non-venting or non-operable window. [top]

Flange

Typically refers to an extruded leg that sticks out beyond the typical perimeter of the frame, as a means of being fastened to the opening or holding a sealed unit (also known as a leg). [top]

Flashing

A thin strip of metal or synthetic material that diverts water away from a window or skylight. [top]

Flat Window

A non-bypass 9000 or 9100 series window. [top]

Float Glass

Glass produced by a process in which the ribbon is floated across a bath of molten tin. The vast majority of flat glass in now produced using this method. The terms 'plate' glass and 'sheet' glass refer the older manufacturing methods still in limited use. [top]

Floor Anchor

A metal device attached to the back of a door frame jamb at its base for securing the frame to the floor. It may be either fixed or adjustable in height. [top]

Floor Plan

A type of schematic found in the Window Shop Drawings which details the layout of the floor and which window tags are installed in each corresponding opening. [top]

Floor Sign-Off

A quality assurance procedure that takes place in various stages throughout the installation to monitor the performance of the installer and to ensure the quality of the installation. [top]

Flush Door

Door produced using two skins or faces separated by a stile-and-rail frame construction at the perimeter. Flush doors may be produced with a hollow core or a solid core. [top]

Fogging

A deposit or film left on an interior surface of a sealed insulating glass unit due to extreme conditions or failed seals. [top]

Frame

The enclosure in which window sash or door panels are mounted. [top]
