Laminated Glass

Two or more sheets of glass with an inner layer of transparent plastic to which the glass adheres if broken. Used for enhanced safety and security, as well as sound reduction. [top]

Leaf

See door leaf. [top]

Left or Right

Whenever used in a term or definition regarding the fenestration industry always refers to the outside, looking in.*Example* - an EDL (end dam left) refers to a end dam that gets installed in the left side of the deflection channel from the outside looking in, from the interior perspective it would be installed on the right hand side. [top]

Level

The level or floor of the installation or the condition of perfect horizontal alignment. [top]

Light to Solar Gain

The ratio between the SHGC and VT. It provides a gauge of the relative efficiency of different glass or glazing types in transmitting daylight while blocking heat gains. The higher the number, the more light transmitted without adding excessive amounts of heat. [top]

Lineal

A standard length profile or shape which is cut and processed to make window and door components. [top]

Lintel

A structural component or beam above a window or door opening that supports the wall above. Also referred to as a header. [top]

A wall that supports loads in addition to its own weight. (Also, Bearing Wall) [top]

Louver

Metal slats, either movable or fixed; as in a door fitted with horizontal slats for admitting air and light and for deflecting rain. [top]

Low Emissivity Glass (Low-E)

A special type of glass having a transparent material fused into its surface which acts as a thermal mirror; used to improve the "U" value of the glazing. [top]
