R-Value

Residential to thermal transfer or heat flow. Higher R-value numbers indicate greater insulating value. R-value is frequently used by the insulation industry and is the reciprocal of the U-value, a value more commonly used in the window industry. [top]

Racking

The forcing out of plumb of structural components, usually by wind, seismic stress, or thermal expansion or contraction. [top]

Radiation

The transfer of heat in the form of electromagnetic waves from one separate surface to another. Low-E glass is designed to reduce this type of heat transfer by reflecting electromagnetic waves. [top]

Reflective Glass

Window glass coated to reflect visible light and solar radiation striking the surface of the glass. [top]

RESFEN

A computer program designed to calculate energy use based on window selection in residential buildings. [top]

Restrictors

The component of a vent that determines how it will pivot and restricts how far it can open. [top]

Retainer Clip

An extruded aluminium clip designed to clip into receptive channels in Deflection/Compensation channel, and corner couplers to hold the window frame in place with compression after the frames have been installed. [top]

Reveal

The distance from the face of a door to the face of the frame on the pivot or hinge side. [top]

Revision

An updated version of a released document (Window Shop Drawings etc.) [top]

RF

Radio Frequency.
Technology used with bar code scanners and other input devices in plant and warehouse tracking systems. [top]

Rigid Insulation

An installation component used by other trades to insulate [top]

Roof Window

An operable unit similar to a skylight placed in the sloping surface of a roof. [top]

Roto Operator

A device used to open a casement vent by rotating a handle rather than manually opening the vent. [top]

Rough Opening

The framed opening in a wall into which a window or door unit is to be installed. [top]

Round-top

See Arched Top. [top]
